Key question:
How can the significance of fabrics and textiles be considered in a way that relates the cultural and historical aspects of the material, designs and patterns to develop contemporary forms and concepts that speak to our global interconnectedness without losing the value of individual identity?
…………
Conditions:
Along with food and a safe place to sleep, clothing is one of the basic requirements for physical maintenance. At the same time, clothing is a marker of identity that both protects the human body and culturally classifies it. Social status can be read from clothing, as can membership of a political group or ideology. Clothing is also a way of communicating the changing conditions of our social reality, fundamental events such as weddings, funerals, religious rituals or everyday events such as clothing for sport, work, going to the theatre, going to a club and so on.
…………
Group to activate:
Students on this programme, students from other universities in other countries
…………
Methodical Approach:
The aim of the design is to develop an understanding of the aesthetic and communicative nature of textiles, which not only envelop the body but also form a narrative in their own right. Beginning with a general introduction to the topic of textile sculpture, participants are challenged to formulate their own culturally conditioned experience with textiles. In doing so, they create the narrative basis for their own creative work.
