SKIN of Identity

A set of tasks as a pre-requisite for on-site participation:

Write a short text:

1. Why did you choose this course?

2. What experiences have you had with clothing - in relation to cultural patterns (rituals, celebrations, everyday life...)?

  • personal history

  • family history

  • local references

  • experiences can be mediated or personal

3. Choose a single item of clothing that illustrates your experience:

  • it could be something you have worn.

  • it can be a representation of a real piece that is no longer available

  • it can be a picture

4. Deconstruct this object.

  • Identify shapes and attributes.

  • Create a catalogue of shapes (and materials)

Physically

  • The piece is literally cut up (not necessarily along the seams).

  • Applications (lace, beads...) are removed. Patterns are isolated.

Medial

  • Elements shown in the picture are 'materialised'.

  • Find fabrics and other materials that are as similar as possible to those seen.
