What is a portrait?
Usually we think of the image of a face as a kind of frozen moment, a crystalline structure to be captured in order to grasp the beauty, or at least the fascination, we feel when we see a touching facial expression.
We take a different approach. We see the portrait of a face as the code of a living movement that becomes life when the viewer looks at it.
Draw a faec based on geometric shapes:
Construct a face step by step using only basic geometric shapes:
Step 1: Draw a Circle for the Head Start with a simple circle, which will serve as the base of the head.
Step 2: Add a Horizontal Line for Eye Alignment Draw a horizontal line across the circle, dividing it into two halves. This will help you align the eyes.
Step 3: Add a Vertical Line for Symmetry Draw a vertical line down the middle of the circle to divide the face symmetrically.
Step 4: Draw Two Small Ovals for the Eyes On the horizontal line, draw two small ovals, one on each side of the vertical line.
Step 5: Add Two Circles inside the Eyes for the Pupils Inside each oval, draw smaller circles to represent the pupils.
Step 6: Draw a Triangle for the Nose Below the eyes, draw an upside-down triangle in the center of the vertical line. This will represent the nose.
Step 7: Add Two Small Circles for Nostrils Inside the bottom corners of the triangle, add two small circles for the nostrils.
Step 8: Draw a Horizontal Ellipse for the Mouth Below the nose, draw a horizontal ellipse to represent the mouth.
Step 9: Add a Curve for the Lips Inside the ellipse, draw a slightly curved line to indicate the separation of the upper and lower lips.
Step 10: Draw Two Curves for the Eyebrows Above each eye, draw a simple curve to represent the eyebrows.
Step 11: Add Two Curved Lines for the Ears On the sides of the circle, draw two curved lines to indicate the ears.
Step 12: Finish with the Neck Using Two Straight Lines Below the head, draw two vertical straight lines coming down from the bottom of the circle to represent the neck.
Draw a faec based on threads:
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to construct a face using thread-like lines:
Step 1: Draw a Thread-like Oval for the Head Start with an oval shape, but make it out of many overlapping, flowing thread-like lines that weave together.
Step 2: Add Two Thread Lines for the Jawline Use two curved, thin thread lines that delicately outline the jaw, converging at the chin.
Step 3: Weave Thread Lines for the Eyes For each eye, weave multiple fine thread lines into oval shapes. Make the pupils with tighter, darker threads that concentrate in the middle.
Step 4: Add Circular Thread Lines for Irises Surround the pupils with circular thread lines, creating a delicate, web-like iris.
Step 5: Form the Nose with Vertical Thread Lines Construct the nose with soft, vertical lines that run down the center of the face, lightly converging to form nostrils.
Step 6: Draw Thread-like Nostrils Add two small circular clusters of thread lines for the nostrils at the base of the nose.
Step 7: Shape the Lips with Thread Loops Create the lips with looping thread lines, forming a delicate, curved shape for both the upper and lower lips.
Step 8: Add Eyebrows with Layered Thread Lines Weave thin, arching lines above each eye to form soft, textured eyebrows that appear as layered threads.
Step 9: Outline the Ears with Looped Threads Draw the ears as two oval shapes made from tightly coiled threads, placed on each side of the head.
Step 10: Add Hair Using Flowing Thread Lines Let thread-like lines flow around the top of the head, creating abstract, delicate hair shapes that cascade outward.
Step 11: Construct the Neck with Thread Strands Use a series of vertical, parallel thread lines to form the neck, keeping the threads close together but flowing naturally.
Step 12: Finalize with Fine Details and Cross Threads Add fine details by weaving lighter, crossing thread lines over the face, giving it texture and depth, as if it were gently stitched together.
